Boundary Detention Center
When Beyond Boundaries, an international action-based practice project, reached its first crowdfunding milestone, Boundary Detention Center became a limited perceptual experiment in action, unlocked collectively by its supporters.
It is neither an artist talk nor a conventional exhibition, but a temporary site of perception. Participants voluntarily surrender an object they normally keep close—perhaps a phone or another electronic device—separating from it temporarily and entering a period of “detention.”
During this unfamiliar hour, habitual connections and dependencies are suspended. Through body, space, observation, stillness, and exchange, participants experience time differently. Sensations of restriction and freedom, dependence and separation, body and consciousness gradually unfold, prompting the question: Where do the boundaries of everyday life come from?
Boundary Detention Center offers no predetermined answer. It is a perceptual experiment co-created by everyone present. As habitual ways of sensing begin to loosen, might we see ourselves, one another, and the invisible boundaries of everyday life anew, form new relationships with them, and open up different ways of understanding the world?
Artist ░▒▓
Milla Lee (Lee Chiung Tieh), whose Amis name is Miko Liafa, is a Taiwanese interdisciplinary performance artist working across performance, installation, moving image, and participatory practice. Her mother is Amis from the Takidis community in Taimali, Taitung, and her father is Indonesian-Chinese Hakka. Her cross-cultural upbringing has led her to examine how identity, land, and culture shape perception.
Using the body as a site of perception and transformation, Lee explores history, collective memory, and relationships among humans, land, nature, and more-than-human life through field research, walking, and embodied practice. Informed by ecofeminist and decolonial perspectives, her work responds to the alienation of sensory and lived experience while exploring how people may reconnect with their environments, one another, and the living world.
In 2025, Lee received support from Taiwan’s National Culture and Arts Foundation for an exchange project in Japan, was shortlisted for the Taoyuan Fine Arts Award, and was selected for Cine+Perfo 2025 in Argentina. She has participated in residencies and performances in Taiwan, Yogyakarta, Tokyo, Ishinomaki, and Aomori. Her representative works include Becoming a Stone, The Fire of Life, and Breath of Chaos. She is currently developing Beyond Boundaries, a two-year international project exploring an “ecology of perception” across boundaries of body, consciousness, culture, and geography.
