At the end of 2019, during an artist residency in Northeast China, I drove along the Yalu River—a natural boundary that cleaves two entirely different worlds. While photographing the scenery on this side, my gaze was constantly drawn to the country across the water. By a stroke of luck near the end of my residency, I decided to cross the river and document North Korea firsthand.

At first, I thought this project would center entirely on the river itself. However, I soon realized that the photos taken in North Korea formed a perfect counterpart to the landscapes I had captured in China. In ways I could never have anticipated, these two sets of images echoed and complemented each other.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond
This video work features casual footage from my travels in North Korea. Set to the rhythm of a travel documentary, the video incorporates subtitles culled from local political propaganda slogans. By restructuring these textual contexts, the work directly translates the contradictions and psychological shock I experienced during the journey into the viewer's own perception.

The Template Show
This work was filmed during a visit to a North Korean middle school, capturing a complete song-and-dance performance staged by students for foreign guests. Through post-production re-editing, the piece moves away from a purely documentary perspective, instead evoking a sense of déjà vu—as if the viewer were watching a staged televised variety show.

Artist ░▒▓

Born in 1984 in Taipei, Taiwan, the artist is a freelance photographer currently based in Taipei.

Their past works often utilized an intuitive snapshot perspective to capture fragmented, fleeting moments of private life, exploring how personal emotions respond to different constructs of time. Visually, this intimate, everyday photographic style—characterized by blurred and flickering imagery—mimics the experience of a fleeting glance. These seemingly "mundane" illusions of reality represent unexpected contingencies within our lived experience, generating an aesthetic pleasure born from the specific psychological distance the photographer establishes with the audience.

Recently shifting focus toward video art, their work now centers on man-made environments, capturing how artificial landscapes are relocated and repurposed as backdrops for unfolding events after they are detached from production. Through these visual explorations, the artist proposes that identity is not merely about discovering where we come from, but also about the ongoing process of locating where we land and how we adapt to it.
