這是我人生的第一次個展,身為一位熱愛探索幾何與生命的創作者,我試圖將多年的數學藝術創作,拓展為一段探索內在的旅程。

這次展覽的核心,建立在穿越千年與橫越東西方文化的脈絡之上。這份將數學原理實體化的起心動念,最早源自我對古印度數學「吠陀方形」的探索,並發現它影響了伊斯蘭幾何藝術中無限與對稱的概念;此外,受到2002年倫敦蛇形藝廊由方形演算法構成建築空間的啟發,我進一步將這些平面的數字規律,延伸並發展成三維空間的立體結構。

請試著想像一個三維的「九九九乘法表」,裡面包含了729個數字,是一個邊長為9的巨大立方體。透過位數根運算,也就是將一個數值的各個位數不斷相加至剩下單一數字的過程,這些在空間中成形的數字結構就稱之為「吠陀立方」。

在吠陀立方的結構中,最迷人的莫過於高度對稱的幾何結構,以及隱藏在其中的對稱面。透過六個對稱面的方程式:X=Y、X+Y=9、Y=Z、Y+Z=9、X=Z 以及X+Z=9,便能夠將充滿數字的立方體,精準切割成24個四面體。這種數學上極簡凝練、不可再分割的單位,彷彿揭示了宇宙萬物運作的本質。凝視這微小的四面體空間,便能產生看見整個立方體的錯視效果。

順著吠陀立方在X、Y、Z三個軸向皆會自我循環的特性,我先將原本剛正的直角結構進行球型化的變形,產生了本次展場中的核心作品〈吠陀球〉,它同樣有著由微小空間洞見完整球體的體驗。在更高維度的視角下,這些數字可以進一步摺疊成主視覺上的四維「克利福德環面」(Clifford torus)。數字會在其中無盡循環與流轉,創造出一個完整的「吠陀宇宙」。

吠陀宇宙本身就是一個跨越時空與心靈的系統。吠陀代表智慧與內在維度,透過作品鏡面的反射,觀測者能照見當下的心靈狀態;宇象徵空間維度,涵蓋了吠陀宇宙系列的無限結構與實體場域的展出空間;宙則是時間維度,象徵觀看過程隨著時間出現的物理變換與光影流動。

本次展品刻意採取低重心的展示設計,邀請你席地而坐,讓身體的感知與視覺一起慢下來。在光線折射與反射出空間層次的過程中,能在吠陀宇宙體驗一種涵容或靈動的感受,期待每一個來到展場的你,都能擁有專屬於自己內外與動靜之間交錯的靈光。

This is my first solo exhibition. As a creator passionate about exploring geometry and life, I attempt to expand my years of mathematical art creation into a journey of inner exploration.

The core of this exhibition is built upon a context that spans millennia and crosses Eastern and Western cultures. The initial motivation to materialize mathematical principles originated from my exploration of the ancient Indian mathematical concept of the "Vedic square," where I discovered its influence on the ideas of infinity and symmetry in Islamic geometric art. Furthermore, inspired by the 2002 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London, whose architectural space was generated by algorithmic square patterns, I further extended these planar numerical rules into three-dimensional structures.

Please imagine a three-dimensional "9x9x9 multiplication table" containing 729 numbers, forming a massive cube with an edge length of 9. Through the digital root calculation, the process of repeatedly summing the digits of a number until a single-digit value is reached, these spatial numerical structures are termed the "Vedic cube."

Within the structure of the Vedic cube, the most fascinating aspects are its highly symmetrical geometric formations and the symmetry planes hidden within. Through the equations of six symmetry planes: X=Y, X+Y=9, Y=Z, Y+Z=9, X=Z, and X+Z=9, this number-filled cube can be precisely divided into 24 tetrahedrons. This mathematically minimalist and indivisible unit seems to reveal the fundamental workings of the universe. Gazing into this minuscule tetrahedral space, one can experience the optical illusion of perceiving the entire cube.

Following the Vedic cube's property of self-repetition along the X, Y, and Z axes, I first applied a spherical transformation to the originally rigid orthogonal structure, producing the core piece of this exhibition, "Vedic Sphere." It similarly offers the experience of perceiving the complete sphere from a fractional space. From a higher-dimensional perspective, these numbers can further fold into the four-dimensional "Clifford torus" seen in the key visual. The numbers circulate and flow endlessly within it, creating a complete "Vedic Universe."

The Vedic Universe itself is a system that transcends time, space, and the mind. "Vedic" represents wisdom and the inner dimension; through the reflection of the artwork's mirrors, observers can reflect upon their current state of mind. "Space" (宇) symbolizes the spatial dimension, encompassing the infinite structures of the Vedic Universe series and the physical exhibition venue. "Time" (宙) stands for the temporal dimension, signifying the physical transformations and the flow of light and shadow that emerge over time during the viewing process.

The artworks in this exhibition intentionally adopt a low-center-of-gravity display design, inviting you to sit on the floor and allow both your physical senses and vision to slow down. As light refracts and reflects through spatial layers, you can experience a holding or dynamic presence within the Vedic Universe. I hope that everyone who visits the exhibition will find their own unique spark, intertwined between the inner and outer self, stillness and motion.

林峽宇 Sharkie Lin

林峽宇是一位跨領域的數學藝術家、獨立策展人、博物館規劃師、科普作者與教育工作者。具備理工背景,擅長將理性的幾何邏輯,轉化為具備視覺張力與空間錯視的感性藝術體驗。

國中時,在無聊的早自習中意外發現數學的趣味,從此開啟了對位數根(Digital Root)的長期研究。他不僅發明了「吠陀立方(Vedic cube)」的數學原理,將其發表於學術論文〈Digital root patterns of three-dimensional space〉,更進一步將這些理性的數字轉化為數學藝術創作。

其中,《吠陀宇宙》系列作品兩度入選國際數學藝術指標展覽 Bridges Conference。他的創作核心圍繞著吠陀立方與其衍生的原理,致力於打破科學與藝術的邊界,為大眾創造具啟發性的美感體驗,期待能為世界帶來更多具備智識與美感的樂趣。

Sharkie Shia-Yu Lin

Sharkie Shia-Yu Lin is an interdisciplinary mathematical artist, independent curator, museum planner, science writer, and educator. With a STEM background, they excel at transforming rational geometric logic into aesthetic art experiences featuring visual tension and spatial illusion.

Their passion for mathematics was sparked by a chance discovery during a boring morning study session in middle school, leading to long-term research on the Digital Root. They not only developed the mathematical principles of the ”Vedic cube“ and published them in the academic paper Digital root

patterns of three-dimensional space, but also further translated these rational numbers into mathematical art.

Notably, their Vedic Universe series has been selected twice for the Bridges Conference, a leading global mathematical art exhibition. Their creative practice focuses on the Vedic cube and its derived principles, striving to break the boundaries between science and art. They aim to create inspiring aesthetic experiences for the public, with the hope of bringing more intellectual and aesthetic joy to the world.
