Exhibition ░▒▓
The ocean is the origin of all life, and womanhood has long been connected to the waters. Afterall, all life springs from the waters– and this is where we begin our journey, the very epicenter of the primordial feminine, the goddesses that dominated human imagination long before the dominion of masculine sky gods. Through a series of mixed media artworks that include watercolor paints, color pencils, and gold ink, the works in this series reimagine a wide variety of goddesses and mythological women to center their inner worlds in each painting. Surrounded by symbolic flowers and surreal ethereal landscapes, each painting combines the soft romanticism of watercolors with precise linework to construct a new vision of womanhood for the future.
Artist ░▒▓
Gina Pan
Gina is a self-trained artist who first fell in love with art while watching her mother create images of goddesses and celestial maidens. Working primarily with watercolors and color pencils, her work centers the female form and mythological imagery, blending together flowing lines, delicate brushwork, and intriguing compositions to reflect on the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth.
As a Chinese-American, Gina’s artwork sits at the crosswalk of Eastern and Western artistic influences. Merging together influences such as Klimt and Mucha alongside prominent Asian artists such as Yoshitaka Amano, CLAMP, and classical Chinese sculptures, she has developed a unique visual vocabulary which allows her paintings to materialize in the space between dreams and reality. Floating in water and space while flowers bloom, the women in her paintings occupy a liminal space between life and death, thus calling the viewer to imagine their own rebirth in the process. Through her artwork, Gina is also reflecting on her own emotional state and journey, thus imbuing each artwork with the rhythm of life, a cycle of constant drowning, transformation, and blooming.
